20th-22th November Mobility & Transportation

The last batch of the Startup Campus Berlin Fall Semester program focussed on Mobility & Transportation. It was not the first time that one of the participants got an immediate invitation into a Berlin accelerator program. It was also a pleasure to welcome two members, one of the biggest German multinational engineering and electronics company as spectators of the program. We were given a glimpse of the Startup-Corporate collaboration from a Corporate point of view. Representing the power of German industry, academia, and research, our startegic partner the GTEC’s are an ever-growing network of organisations and individuals who can provide value and expertise to our startups. the Innogy is one of the founding partners of them, what was founded in 1898, Innogy is one of Germany’s foremost utility companies with around 54 bn € in revenue and an innovation leader in renewable and smart energy. The Henkel is also in the bord of founders. With its mother company founded in 1876, Henkel today is the leading solution provider for adhesives, sealants and functional coatings worldwide. the Innogy. Most of our Berlin Partners have years of experience in Startup-Corporate collaboration, so their input and feedback were incredibly important in this session. On Tuesday night the startups participated in the pitch training at the Axel Springer Plug and Play Accelerator HQ. They listened to startup pitches, networked with founders and investors and took away great insights and inspiration.

15th-17th November Photonic&Optic

We welcomed quite the academic batch this week! Our participants included a doctor, members of the Academy of Science and University students who have dedicated themselves to entrepreneurship. We focused on the so-called ‘knowledge-based innovation,’ and Berlin is the best place to learn how to turn their business know-how to a business reality. The meetings with the Program Manager of TechStars and the Investment Director of Plug&Play definitely helped with that. Furthermore, the 3-hour-long meeting with the Head of the Center for Photonics and Optics of Adlershof Science City was the most appropriate meeting thus far.
The following three teams have extensive experience in research and have just taken their first steps toward business development:
FiberScope – Ultrafast Fiber Lasers for Advanced Nonlinear Microscopy Applied to Dermatology. This 95% in-house developed system reduces the cost of the pulsed laser. Thanks to this, the Dermatologists and skin specialists are able to capture real-time measurements.
Dental Scanner Solution – Developing a new 3D dental scanner that promotes the emergence and spreading of traditional sampling procedures with favorable parameters. This is especially important, since the traditional (gypsum) imprinting process has practically seen no changes nor innovation in the past 50 years.
3Diodic – Speeds up the metal printing process, making it applicable to serial production. To create a high-power laser matrix, they will use individually-controlled laser diodes placed in close, parallel lines which are slightly offset from one another in order to fill the gaps between the diodes.

8th-10th November InnoEnergy

We started November off in association with the top players of the Berlin InnoEnergy scene! The selected StartUps from the Green Industry made a successful introduction and received valuable mentorship from EIT KIC InnoEnergy Germany at EUREF Campus. Participants visited the largest Science Park in Germany (the fourth biggest in the EU) and completed a 3-hour-long workshop with the mentorship and guidance of Adlershof Science City. We met with AtomLeap business intelligence corporation, a member of Plug&Play, and took part in an extremely interesting simulation of a Term Sheet negotiation at Startupbootcamp.
The teams from the InnoEnergy batch included:
Platio – Outdoor energy-producing, modular-paving system, which provides unique off-grid renewable energy system by integrating high-performance solar cells into attractive sidewalk-paving elements made of recycled plastic.
DimTech – Intelligent and remote light network monitoring control system. Smart measuring function, power tracking, BigData analysis, tailor-made memory and sensor units for street and traffic lights.
AgroCarbon – Solid fuels from woody debris generated at hydro power plants, where the wooden debris is handled. The patented chemical technology yields a final, dry, high-energy and dense product!
Bigdee – Specialized in elevator usage with the possibility to control third party systems only if they are interface-compatible. While this solution is not specialized, but generic usage, it can be made compatible with any third party system.
Next week we will continue with Photonics & Optics after completing Mobility & Transportation (20 – 22th November) in association with Deutsche Bahn MindBox Accelerator. Application deadline: 15th of November.

CEE startups to receive opportunities in Berlin

After the opening ceremony in June, the Startup Campus Berlin program will finally commence in October. The goal of this initiative is to introduce the Berlin startup ecosystem to CEE startups. The German capital offers an extensive network of mentors, a wide array of coworking spaces, and state and venture capital investments to innovative startups.

In recent years the German government has made serious efforts to turn Berlin into the leading innovation and startup hub of Europe. The largest accelerator networks and incubators of the world, along with german international companies have launched several sector-specific programs in order to utilise this new form of industrial innovation.

Enterprise Hungary has launched the program Startup Campus Berlin with the intention of providing a platform of self-introduction for CEE startups, the use of which should aid them in sourcing funding for their projects and stepping into the global market. The specific agendas for the different installments of the program will be put together while taking into account the specific startups involved, and the sectors they focus on.” – said Zsolt Kovács, CEO of Enterprise Hungary.

Startups selected to participate in the program will have the opportunity of getting to know local accelerators (GTEC, StartupBootcamp, PlugandPlayTechCenter, WISTA etc.), of introducing their startup to international mentors, and of exchanging knowledge with startups (and startup leaders) who have already settled in Berlin. They will also receive information regarding the legal and financial aspects of founding a company from Berlin Partner, and will learn about venture capital investment practices from the local Venture Capital Association.

Selected startups will be able to choose from the following services:

  • Complete program organization,
  • Getting to know the local Accelerator Programs
  • Introduction of Enterprise Support Program and local legislation,
  • Thorough overview of Venture Capital Investment Practice,
  • Opportunity to pitch to, and receive feedback from International Mentors,
  • Opportunities for B2B meetings and Networking,
  • Free Coworking office use, and a chance to exchange experience with local startups,
  • Accommodation in Berlin.

The target market of this program is made up of the founders and leaders of startup enterprises ready to enter an international market. This means CEE startups who have a working prototype, a seed investment or regional market presence, and are ready to launch an enterprise in Berlin.

The most important task of Hungarian startups in Berlin is to find potential investors and customers. Initiatives like this definitely help startups in building the Berlin networks they will need in the future.” – said Andy Tóth, investment director of Plug and Play Ventures Germany about the necessity of international presence.

In harmony with the focal industrial areas of the Berlin ecosystem, 4 startup entrepreneurs, from each of the 7 industrial areas during 7 weeks will have the opportunity to participate in the program. Participants will also need to pay a one-time 150€ participation fee.
